VAT-free text donations for UK charities

The Mobile Data Association has arranged a dedicated range of SMS short codes that can be used for charities. Any UK five-digit SMS Text Message Short Code beginning with 70 is now automatically considered a charity code and will have the VAT waived. In the past this has only been possible for specific national campaigns with the agreement of HM Revenue and Customs. The scheme has been approved by 3, Orange, T-Mobile, Telefónica O2 and Vodafone, all of whom won’t charge VAT for text donations but will pass the full amount directly to the charitable organisation. Standard commercial terms for setting up and running the service will still apply. [Press release]
