Camera phones are killing traditional film cameras

Imaging technology company Ontela has published the results of a survey that “indicate the imminent death of the traditional film camera” for consumers in the USA. In its press release entitled “Camera Phone Officially Kills Film Camera” it says the number of people who own a traditional film camera has now dropped below half of the population; falling from 67% in 2007 to 61% in 2008 and now to 48% this year. Meanwhile cameraphone ownership has increased from 70% in 2007 to 87% in 2009.

However, the survey – which doesn’t make any mention of digital cameras – also says the majority of cameraphone users can’t transfer photos from their phones. 61% of users were unable to upload pictures to the web… even though 90% wanted to move their images from their handset.
