Newcastle art exhibition rearranged by SMS voting

An interactive art exhibition in Newcastle is being controlled and rearranged by text messages from visitors every day. Award-winning design agency Sumo has integrated SMS technology into its ‘Democracy’ exhibition, which forms part of North East England’s Design Event 09. It runs until 31st October at the Square Yard Gallery in Newcastle.

The exhibition is displaying art on plasma screens; visitors vote for their favourite pieces by SMS or in a traditional ballot, with popular pictures given more prominence in the exhibition.

Jim Richardson, Managing Director of Sumo, said “The focus of Democracy has been to urge the global design community to think about the different ways we can communicate our points of view, as a person’s freedom of speech is a priceless commodity gifted to most people in society and a right that should be available to all from Ipswich to Istanbul and beyond”.

Democracy text message voting“The beauty of this exhibition is that if you visited the gallery every day, you’d witness a different show each time as the exhibition constantly evolves, keeping the design experience fresh and exciting for the viewer”.
