Two-thirds of mobile phone owners plan to upgrade within 2 years

The latest Technology Disposability Survey conducted by ICR has found that two out of three mobile phone owners intend to replace their devices within the next two years.

This US-based survey found that younger people were more likely to upgrade; 77% of people aged 18-34 planned to replace their phone or PDA within the next two years, compared with 46% of those over 65.

However, it's not a desire for the latest technology that's driving this change; 78% of owners say they'll need to replace their mobile because the item will get broken or will be lost. Just 19% are after a newer version.

And when it comes to making the change, most people made sure their old handset went to a good home. 35% of respondents donated or gave away their used product, with 26% recycling it and 14% selling it. Another 24% kept their old phone as a spare; only 9% said they'd throw it away. [Press release]
