No joy for Motorola in patent rift with Research in Motion

The High Court has decided that Research in Motion didn't infringe a Motorola email patent with the technology used on its BlackBerry devices. The two companies had a royalty agreement until 2007 but RIM didn't extend the agreement when it expired.

Motorola took legal action but Justice Richard Arnold ruled this week that the patent wasn't valid – and even if it had been valid, RIM hadn't infringed it.

Separate legal action about a number of Motorola patents is currently pending in the USA. [Sources: Bloomberg.com; iTWire.com]
