More than one in six of all European broadband connections is mobile

A new research report from Berg Insight estimates that 17.3% of broadband connections in Europe use HSPA or LTE mobile technology. The number of mobile connections grew by 71% year-on-year in 2009 to reach 25 million and is forecast to reach 81 million by 2015.

The percentage of mobile broadband users in North America is much smaller; mobile broadband accounts for just 7.1% of the total number of broadband connections.

However, levels of mobile broadband adoption vary dramatically across Europe. Austria leads with 40% of all broadband connections running over mobile networks – over 15% of Austrians are using mobile broadband - while Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden all have penetration rates above 10%. At the other end of the scale, Belgium, Greece and the Netherlands have less than 3% mobile broadband penetration.
