Apple updates iPod touch to reflect iPhone features - and iTunes gets social

Tonight's big Apple announcement was, as expected, focussed on the music rather than the mobile side of the business.

The company has introduced a new iPod touch music player with many of the features that were first introduced on the iPhone 4, including a 'Retina Display', Apple's A4 chip, FaceTime video calling over WiFi (with front-facing camera and microphone), 3-axis gyroscope and HD video recording. It can manage up to 40 hours of music playback and seven hours of video playback on a single battery charge.

iTunes, Apple's music service, has been augmented with a music-oriented social network called 'Ping'. It lets users follow their favourite artists and friends to discover the music they’re listening to. Ping works on desktop computers and on the iPhone 4 & iPod touch.

There's also a new iPod shuffle and a new iPod nano, plus a price cut for the Apple TV service. The new iPod touch will be available next week.
