Asus Padfone promises to combine smartphone and tablet formats

ASUSTeK, which produces ASUS computers and smartphones, has announced a new converged device called the Padfone. It combines a smartphone with a tablet computer, sharing information and 3G access across both formats. The tablet ‘pad’ can also charge the smartphone’s battery.

Jonney Shih, chairman of ASUS, said “Breaking the rules and changing the status quo are the keys to our success, and we strive to offer customers an experience that surpasses their expectations.”

Full specifications haven’t been announced, but the Padfone is expected to combine a 4.3-inch smartphone with a 10.1-inch tablet. The phone fits into a compartment on the back of the tablet; unlike the Motorola Atrix lapdock there’s no keyboard.
