Samsung becomes the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer

Research from Strategy Analytics shows that global handset shipments increased by 3% in the first quarter of this year to 368 million units. Samsung overtook Nokia, becoming the world’s number one handset supplier for the first time ever.

Alex Spektor, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, said “As volumes contracted in key developed markets like Western Europe and North America, global handset shipments grew just 3% annually to reach 368.0 million units in Q1 2012. Samsung was the star performer, shipping 93.5 million handsets worldwide and capturing a record 25% marketshare. Five years after it captured the number-two spot from Motorola, Samsung has finally become the world’s largest handset vendor in volume terms.”

Handset shipments from Nokia dropped by 24% year-on-year to 82.7 million units, giving it 22.5% of the global market, while Apple shipped 35.1 million handsets and claimed 9.5% market share - almost double its Q1 2011 total.
