Lack of new features partly to blame for industry problems

The latest purveyor of doom for 2009 is communications research company In-Stat. Its latest report says the mobile phone industry faces "unprecedented challenges" this year following 25 years of growth. It doesn't just blame the economy but also says the lack of new phone features will be a problem. The only good news seems to be for manufacturers of dual-mode cellular/WiFi phones, where shipments are expected to quadruple from 2008 to 2012. [Press release]
