Google announces Android 4.3, new Nexus 7 tablet and TV streaming dongle

Yesterday Google announced a new version of its Android mobile platform - Android 4.3 - and a much-rumoured update to its Nexus 7 tablet. In addition, there was a new ‘Chromecast’ HDMI adaptor that’ll let users stream content to their TV from most portable devices.

Chromecast is launching in the USA next week for $35 (£23), although UK availability and pricing haven’t been confirmed. It’ll work with most phones, tablets and laptops to send Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV and Google Play Music content to the television. Web pages from the Chrome browser can also be shared.

The new ASUS-produced Nexus 7 tablet has a higher-resolution screen than the original model, offers enhanced graphics, is lighter and is equipped with stereo surround sound speakers. US pricing is from $229 (£149); UK availability is yet to be confirmed. The first versions will be WiFi-only, although a 4G version is due in the future.

And Android 4.3 - still known as ‘Jelly Bean’ - is being rolled out to compatible devices as well as being pre-loaded on the new Nexus 7. New features include parental controls and support for Bluetooth Smart technology.
