Three times more mobiles than fixed-line phones worldwide

The International Telecommunication Union has just published new statistics comparing information and communication technologies in 154 countries over a five-year period to 2007. It says 153 of the 154 countries have improved their level of information and communication technology, with the highest relative growth taking place in Eastern Europe. By the end of 2008, there were over three times more mobile phone subscriptions than fixed telephone lines globally - and two-thirds were in the developing world, compared with less than half in 2002. When relative costs were compared, the cost of mobile phone technology was lowest in the Hong Kong area of China followed by Denmark and Singapore. [Press release]
