Ofcom ‘clarifies’ cost of calls to 0870 numbers

Telecoms regulator Ofcom is changing the rules concerning 0870 numbers from 1st August. However, there’ll be no mandatory change to the cost of calling the numbers from mobiles and fixed-line phones; this cost can either be the same as calling ‘geographic’ national 01, 02 and 03 numbers or can be a higher ‘premium’ rate. The new rules make communications providers responsible for ensuring their customers know how much it costs to call an 0870 number. Wasn’t that the case anyway?  [Press release; Ofcom statement; consumer guidance]
