Worldwide mobile data revenue up 24% year-on-year

Informa Telecoms & Media says global revenue from mobile data services is up 24% from last year, which means it now accounts for around 15% of all mobile operator revenue. The total figure from non-voice services for 2008 is $188.7 billion, with 60% coming from text messaging. There's a considerable variation in usage around the world; for example, over a fifth of revenue from North American mobile operators comes from non-voice services, while only 5% of revenue from mobile operators in Africa comes from data.
