Northern Rail gives conductors mobile access to real-time train information

Train operator Northern Rail is using Vodafone to help deliver real-time journey information to over 1,000 conductors, which means customers can be kept better informed throughout their journeys.

However, when you look closer, this news story seems to be nothing more than the roll-out of existing technology. Apparently train conductors will now be able to use their BlackBerry devices to view live departure information. Much like anyone else with a BlackBerry, really. Unlike most other mobile phone users, Northern Rail conductors are going to receive BlackBerry training. And there is some innovation planned; in the future Vodafone and Northern Rail plan to offer mobile solutions that’ll handle crew rostering, overtime and holiday requests. At least it’ll avoid the embarrassing situation of passengers knowing more than the train crew. [Press release via RealWire]
