One-third of mobile accessory revenue comes from kit included with handsets

… or, if you prefer, two-thirds of mobile phone accessory revenue comes from ‘aftermarket’ sales. Those are the figures from ABI Research, which says there’s a trend for manufacturers to remove accessories from handset boxes and sell them separately – so that two-thirds figure is likely to rise.

ABI Research says the most popular aftermarket accessories are memory cards and protective silicone cases; both attributed to smartphone sales. Bluetooth and wired headset sales are also growing, driven by music-playing devices, while sales of add-on GPS receivers are in decline as GPS technology is incorporated into an increasing number of mobile phones.
