A third of Australians announce big events by text

A survey from Australian mobile network Telstra has revealed that one in three of its customers are choosing SMS text messages to announce major life events (as opposed to to making a phone call, using email or logging on to a social networking site). Top events for texting are the news of a birth (25%) and news of a promotion (18%). When it comes to MMS picture messaging, this is used most while travelling (44%), buying a house (33%) or when their children are being born (33%).

Most curiously, 44% of mobile users admit they’ve sent texts to look busy when they are by themselves! [Press release]
