Orange goes greener with mini SIM cards

Orange says it’s the first European mobile operator to introduce mini SIM cards. Well, that’s not strictly true – just about every mobile device uses mini SIM cards these days – but what Orange is talking about is the credit card sized piece of plastic that holds each new mini-SIM.

90% of that plastic isn’t used by customers, so Orange has launched a trial scheme that’ll see each SIM produced in just half the amount of plastic that’s usually used. With 2.9 billion SIM cards produced last year, that’s over 5,000 tonnes of plastic that could be saved if every network operator around the world followed Orange’s trial scheme. [Press release]
