Opera Mini says it saves customers over $8 billion per year

The latest monthly report from browser company Opera says its Opera Mini browser was used in September by 35.6 million people, an 11.5% increase on the previous month and a 150% increase year-on-year. Those 35.6 million people viewed 15 billion pages; up 7.2% from August and up 230% since September 2008.

When it comes to data usage, Opera says its servers processed up to 2.1 petabytes of data for Opera Mini customers – compressing it by up to 90% and turning it into 227 million MB. It’s calculated that this compression is saving customers in the top 10 Opera Mini-using countries $672 million per month, which is approximately $8.1 billion (£4.9 billion) per year based on average ‘per MB’ charges.
