Police smartphones are increasing time on the beat by 10%

We've previously mentioned the positive difference that smartphones can make to the police – and now another UK police force has adopted mobile working. Northamptonshire Police is giving its frontline officers BlackBerry devices that'll provide officers with a direct connection to the Police National Computer as well as letting them access duty sheets, policy forms and witness statements.

Initial trials showed that the BlackBerry smartphones were being used more than 20 times a day, increasing the time that officers spent on the beat by up to one hour of each ten-hour shift. [Press release]
