Sony announces cloud-based music service for the UK

Sony has launched a cloud-based digital music service called ‘Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity’, which will offer access to millions of songs from major labels. There’ll be around six million tracks available from launch. It’ll launch in the UK and Ireland with availability in other markets due to be announced during 2011.

The service will let users play music via a wide variety of internet-connected Sony devices including network-enabled BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray DVD players, the PlayStation3 gaming system and personal computers. It’ll also be rolled-out to a number of portable Sony devices as well as Android-based mobile handsets.

‘Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity’ builds on the success of the company’s Video On Demand service, which was launched earlier this year.

Kazuo Hirai, President of Networked Products & Services Group at Sony Corporation, said “As we start to expand Qriocity globally, these services ‘powered by Qriocity’ offer a single ID log-in and wallet solution, and empower users to easily consume content including music and video across a growing number of integrated devices. Seamless accessibility to content through these fresh user experiences will enrich Sony’s network service offerings and continually add value to the unique aspects of Sony’s network-enabled products.”

‘Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity’ has been developed in partnership with Omnifone. It’ll cost from £3.99 per month.
