M&S tries free smoothie offer on O2 location-based marketing service

Marks & Spencer has signed up to the O2 More location-based marketing service for six months, sending targeted offers to interested O2 customers when they’re near an M&S store.

Offers are sent as conventional SMS text messages; customers simply quote a unique product code from the text if they want to redeem the offer. The first offer was launched this week, promising customers a free 250ml smoothie with the purchase of certain sandwiches and salads.

Nicky Fouhy, Online Marketing Manager for M&S, said “Mobile is already an incredibly important channel for us with over two million people shopping at M&S on their mobile phone last year. Proximity marketing is a new and exciting mobile marketing channel that will enable us to offer value to customers and in a targeted and engaging way. We’re very excited to be involved and, with over one million consumers, O2’s ‘You Are Here’ service offers us a great opportunity to demonstrate M&S quality and value.”

O2 launched its location-based ad service in the UK last October.
