Microsoft offers partial explanation for mystery Windows Phone 7 data usage

Unexpectedly high data usage from some Windows Phone 7 smartphones has been acknowledged by Microsoft, although the company hasn’t given many details. Some customers have reported ‘phantom data’ usage that was exceeding 1GB per month.

Microsoft said the problem was caused by “a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones” but didn’t explain whether or not it was software supplied with the handset. It says it’s working with the third party and is also looking at creating its own solution.
