MasterCard certifies application for NFC payments on mobile phones

Digital security company Gemalto has announced that its SIM card embedded with a Near Field Communication application has been certified by MasterCard. It’s the world’s first SIM-embedded app that complies with MasterCard’s mobile NFC spec.

Gemalto’s now preparing to launch the service in the UK with a global financial institution and a mobile operator.

The MasterCard NFC payment specification, which is called Mobile MasterCard PayPass M/Chip 4, can be used for debit, credit and prepaid cards. Customers can check transaction history on their mobile phone, set their Personal Identification Number and can even top-up a prepaid mobile account from their phone.

Jean-Claude Deturche, senior vice-president of mobile financial solutions at Gemalto, said “This new certification from MasterCard makes Gemalto the first on the market for this mobile product and will enable banks and wireless operators to offer a secure, innovative and convenient payment means to their entire customer base. Gemalto is committed to supporting its customers in their large scale deployments of mobile NFC payment, with a complete mobile contactless offer.”
