RIM confirms infrastructure failure and admits BlackBerry service still not restored

Following problems with BlackBerry online services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa since Monday, RIM has now confirmed that users in the Americas are also suffering delays. Email, web access and BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) have all been affected.

RIM says the messaging delays were caused by a core switch failure within its infrastructure, with a back-up system failing to work. This resulted in a backlog of data being generated.

The company has apologised and says it’s working to restore normal service as quickly as possible.

A statement from RIM this morning says "From 6am BST today, all services across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as India, have been operating with significant improvement. We continue to monitor the situation 24x7 to ensure ongoing stability. Thank you for your patience."
