Interim US ruling says Motorola has infringed a Microsoft patent

The US International Trade Commission has ruled that certain Motorola Mobility products infringe on a Microsoft patent. Microsoft had said that several of its patents were affected, although the ITC said Motorola has only violated one of them.

This is an initial determination; a final decision is expected within the next six months.

Scott Offer, senior vice president and general counsel of Motorola Mobility, said “We are very pleased that the majority of the rulings were favorable to Motorola Mobility. The ALJ’s initial determination may provide clarity on the definition of the Microsoft 566 patent for which a violation was found and will help us avoid infringement of this patent in the U.S. market.”

Motorola Mobility also notes that it has active patent infringement proceedings against Microsoft in a number of jurisdictions.
