Wapple defeats Apple in UK trademark battle

Mobile web technology business Wapple has overcome several complaints from Apple in a trademark case. Wapple, whose company name is a pun on Wireless Application Protocol, was founded in 2004.

The company applied to trademark its name in 2006 but was challenged by Apple, which claimed Wapple was taking advantage of Apple’s brand. The UK Intellectual Property Office has now ruled in favour of Wapple keeping its trademark.

Anne Thomas, co-founder and COO of Wapple, said “We are overjoyed with the result and incredibly proud. The case is a victory for truth over tactics. Self-belief is always critical when establishing and growing any technology business and even more so when you are early to market as we were.”

Costs were awarded to Wapple, which had been represented by law firm Gately.
