New research from Nielsen shows how the adoption and usage of mobile apps in the USA has increased in the last 12 months. The company notes that app usage has been driven by Android and iOS users, with one of these two operating systems being used by 88% of people who’ve recently downloaded an app.
In the past year, the average number of apps installed on an average smartphone has increased by 28%, from 32 applications to 41. However, the total amount of time spent on apps has only increased slightly, from 37 minutes per day in 2011 to 39 minutes per day in 2012.
The top five mobile apps have remained unchanged: Facebook, YouTube, Android Market, Google Search and Gmail still are the most popular choices.
