Apple announces new company chairman

Apple has named Arthur ‘Art’ Levinson as the Company’s non-executive Chairman of the Board. He’s been a board director for over ten years and has been a co-lead director since 2005.

The company also announced that Robert ‘Bob’ Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, will join Apple’s board and will serve on the audit committee.

460 million mobiles shipped worldwide in Q3 according to new research

Last month, Strategy Analytics calculated that global smartphone shipments had grown by 44% year-on-year to reach 117 million units in the third quarter of 2011, while total global handset shipments were up 14% to 390 million units.

Now Gartner has released its calculations. It says worldwide sales of mobile devices were up 5.6% year-on-year to 440.5 million units, with 460 million units actually sold to retailers.

Financial services businesses now need to record mobile phone calls

From this week, the UK’s Financial Services Authority requires mobile phone conversations and text messages to be recorded by certain regulated financial organisations.

In addition, these firms will need to take ‘reasonable steps’ to make sure employees don’t conduct any regulated business on private mobiles.

BlackBerry's BBM Music goes live in the UK

The BBM Music service from Research In Motion has gone live in the UK, charged at £4.99 per month after the 60-day free trial ends.

The downloadable app, which was revealed in August, lets users save up to 50 music tracks on their BlackBerry device.
