STMicroelectronics to leave ST-Ericsson partnership

Chip producer STMicroelectronics has announced a new strategic plan that’ll see it leaving the ST-Ericsson joint partnership with Ericsson.

The move is expected to be completed in autumn 2013.

Huawei plans new R&D centre in Finland

A few months ago we heard that Huawei was planning to spend £1.3 billion in the UK on a number of projects during the next five years. It’s now announced new plans to invest €70 million (£56 million) to establish a research and development centre in Helsinki.

The money will be spent over the next five years as the R&D centre expands to employ more than 100 people.

Huawei wins network management deal from Three UK

Ericsson agreement comes to an end

Huawei has signed an agreement with Three UK to deliver service management and operations for Three’s core network. It’ll also be responsible for managing Three’s UK information and communications technology applications through a partnership with Tech Mahindra.

As a result, a number of staff will be transferred to work for Huawei’s managed services business and Tech Mahindra.

London taxis expected to become mobile WiFi hotspots next year

London-based Eyetease Limited says it’s received approval from Transport for London to introduce a new WiFi service in London black cabs.

The service, which is called CabWiFi, will be free to passengers for 15 minutes after they’ve watched a 15-second advertisement. Drivers will be able to use the service via their own password.

10 million worldwide sales for LG Optimus L-series smartphones

LG Electronics says sales of its Optimus L-Series smartphones have exceeded 10 million units worldwide. The first L-series devices were announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

All of the company’s L-series phones follow a design identity called ‘L-Style’, which was also introduced at MWC 2012.
