UK communications services are less expensive than other European countries, says new research

New Ofcom research shows that UK consumers are benefiting from lower-priced communications services than people in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the USA.

These findings form part of Ofcom’s ninth International Communications Market Report.

The Alliance for Wireless Power announces its new consumer brand: Rezence

The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) has announced a new consumer-facing brand - Rezence - which will be the official name for the organisation’s wireless power technology.

A4WP, which is one of several competing wireless power groups including Qi and the Power Matters Alliance, expects the first Rezence-enabled products to become available early next year.

Instagram creates its own photo and video messaging service

Photo sharing service Instagram, which was acquired by Facebook last year, has launched a photo and video messaging feature called Instagram Direct.

This new feature forms part of the standard Instagram app.

Ofcom confirms plans to simplify UK phone call charges from 2015

Clearer pricing for numbers beginning 08, 09 and 118

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom says it’ll simplify fixed-line and mobile phone call charges from 2015.

There’ll be clearer pricing for ‘non-geographic’ numbers that start 08, 09 and 118. In addition, calls that begin 080 will always be free from mobile phones as well as from landlines.

New report says the Internet of Things will grow almost 30-fold in just 11 years

The Internet of Things (IoT) - internet-connected devices with embedded technology but excluding smartphones, tablets and personal computers - will grow to 26 billion units worldwide in 2020, according to a new report from technology research company Gartner.

That’s almost a 30-fold increase from 900 million devices in 2009.
