New Virgin Mobile tariffs offer unlimited data plus smartphone insurance

Virgin Media has launched a number of new ‘pay monthly’ mobile phone tariffs today, including an unlimited data deal.

The ‘Premiere’ tariff offers unlimited data, unlimited text messaging, unlimited voice calls to UK landlines and 2,500 minutes for calling UK mobiles every month (subject to terms & conditions). It’s priced at £26 per month for a two-year minimum term, with a £5 monthly discount available for customers who already subscribe to other Virgin Media services at home.

MEPs want European cars to phone for help... but there's still no legislation

The EU’s transport and internal market committees have adopted a report that says all new cars sold in the EU from 2015 should be able to dial the emergency services automatically when they are involved in a serious accident. This recommendation isn’t legally binding, although the European Commission is expected to announce proposed legislation later this year.

Vehicles with ‘eCall’ mobile technology would automatically call the Europe-wide emergency number 112 when a crash is detected.

New CEO for 'feelscreen' company Senseg

Senseg, the Finnish company that enables smartphone and tablet screens to offer different textures when touched, has appointed Paul Costigan as its Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Costigan was previously the chief operating officer and Asia-Pacific region president for video processor business Movidius, although he’s probably best known as co-founder and CEO of fabless semiconductor firm Massana.

Android-powered Google TV coming to the UK in July

The Google TV smart television platform is coming to the UK, offering a combination of internet services and streaming video on almost any conventional TV. Sony Europe is producing the first UK-bound devices with the NSZ-GS7 Internet Player due to arrive next month.

Google TV is notable for its use of the Android operating system, providing a familiar interface and the ability to add applications from the Google Play app store to the Google TV player.

Microsoft started last week with news of an own-brand rival to the Apple iPad. The new Windows-based Microsoft Surface tablets will start to appear later this year, although full details of the specifications – including whether or not there’ll be cellular connectivity – remain unconfirmed.
