Budget-price Nokia music phone has window-rattling volume and 61 days of battery life

Nokia has launched a new budget-priced music phone that's intended to retail at around £30. However it looks as though the Nokia X1-00 is destined for developing markets rather than the UK, with initial availability expected from next month.

The Nokia X1 is equipped with a large rear-mounted loudspeaker rated at 106 phon; loud enough to rattle window frames!

Opera Software opens its own application store

Mobile browser company Opera Software has opened its Opera Mobile Store in more than 200 countries today.

The Opera Mobile Store offers a combination of free and paid applications for most mobile platforms, including Java, Symbian, BlackBerry and Android operating systems. Each user is shown a storefront that's customised to their phone OS, language and currency.

BlackBerry Protect moves into open beta (but not in the UK yet)

RIM's BlackBerry Protect security software, which was announced as a limited beta last year, is now available for anyone to try - but only if they’re based in North America and some parts of Latin America. Other countries will be added in the next few months, although there's no confirmation whether or not the UK will be included.

BlackBerry Protect lets users backup, restore and locate a BlackBerry smartphone wirelessly.
