Mobile broadband only delivers 24% of advertised speed

Broadband benchmarking company Epitiro says UK mobile broadband speeds are dramatically less than advertised. Its new report, entitled ‘UK Mobile Broadband Performance Analysis – Initial Findings 2009’, involved monitoring the actual customer experience of UK mobile broadband users. Over 1,300 UK mobile broadband users were selected at random to download Epitiro’s monitoring software, which reported over 1.4 million test results from December 2008 until May 2009. Web surfing, downloading, VoIP calls, internet gaming and streaming video were monitored on the 3, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Virgin Media and Vodafone networks.

Research shows INQ1 'Facebook phone' is mainly used for Facebook

Hutchison Whampoa company INQ Mobile has released UK usage data from the INQ1 handset, which has become known as the Facebook phone.

Apparently 65% of INQ1 customers are now using Facebook, with most of them going online at least daily.

Mobile market is polarising into smartphones and low-end handsets

Annual sales of low-cost mobile handsets will rise by 22% to over 700 million in the next five years, according to a new report from Juniper Research. Much of this growth – and the majority of new mobile users - will come from emerging markets. However, smartphone sales are also due to increase. Juniper Research says 27% of mobile devices shipped worldwide in 2014 will be smart devices – up from 13% last year. And a report from the Yankee Group confirms this trend, calculating that 41% of consumers will choose a smartphone when they buy or upgrade their next handset.
