Sony Mobile Communications has announced that Kunimasa ‘Kuni’ Suzuki will become President and CEO of Sony Mobile from 16th May 2012.

Bert Nordberg, the current President and CEO, will step down from these roles to become Chairman of the Sony Mobile Communications board.

Digital media business Yahoo! has announced restructuring plans this week, which will see around 2,000 people being “notified of job elimination or phased transition”.

Scott Thompson, the company’s CEO, said “We are intensifying our efforts on our core businesses and redeploying resources to our most urgent priorities. Our goal is to get back to our core purpose - putting our users and advertisers first - and we are moving aggressively to achieve that goal.”

Figures from ABI Research forecast that mobile users will download nearly 36 billion apps in 2012.

Android and Apple’s iOS will make up 83% of the app downloads, while only 2% will come from Windows Phone devices. However, although the Microsoft figure is relatively low, it’s double last year’s share.

Samsung Electronics has announced a new mobile advertising exchange in partnership with digital advertising business OpenX Technologies.

The new exchange - called the Samsung AdHub Market, Powered by OpenX - will let advertisers buy mobile advertising opportunities from developers. It’s expected to launch in the second half of 2012.

The European Commission has opened two antitrust investigations against Motorola Mobility.

It wants to find out whether Motorola has used ‘standard essential’ patents to distort competition and whether its licensing conditions are appropriate.
