Qualcomm reports another record quarter

Wireless technology business Qualcomm Incorporated has announced results for the second quarter of its current financial year.

Revenue was up 28% year-on-year to $4.94 billion, while net income was up 123% year-on-year to $2.23 billion.

4G doesn't come to Three

Mark Bridge writes:

Earlier today, Three.co.uk published a blog post headlined “4G comes to Three”. But it hasn’t.

I spent most of this morning here at Mobile World Congress muttering about the blog before returning to it this afternoon. And suddenly it’s changed.

The blog post remains. The headline is completely different. Now we’re told “Three to launch leading edge 3G service”.

Ericsson and ZTE sign cross-licensing patent agreement

Ericsson and ZTE have resolved patent licensing issues that had seen both parties taking legal action against each other.

In April 2011, Ericsson filed lawsuits in Germany, UK and Italy against ZTE for infringing on some of its GSM and 3G/UMTS technology patents. ZTE responded with its own patent claim.

UN ITU agrees specifications for next-generation mobile technology

The International Telecommunications Union, which is the United Nations agency for IT and telecoms, has confirmed the specifications for next-generation mobile technologies. This will be known as IMT-Advanced and will include ‘LTE-Advanced’ and ‘WirelessMAN-Advanced’ (which is also known as Mobile WiMAX Release 2).

Although WiMAX, LTE and HSPA+ are often described as a ‘4G’ service, the ITU sees IMT-Advanced as being the true fourth-generation evolution.

Growth in royalty payments by mobile device manufacturers is starting to slow

Total royalty payments for GSM, WCDMA and LTE technology on mobile phones are approaching $20 billion per year, according to a new report from ABI Research.

It says the amount paid in licensing fees by manufacturers will continue to grow for the next few years but is starting to flatten out.
