Mobile malware infections continue to rise, with Android devices a favourite target

The number of mobile malware infections increased by 17% during the first six months of 2014, which is almost double the rate seen in 2013.

It mirrors a similar infection rate in residential fixed-line networks, from a 9% increase in December 2013 to 18% at the end of June 2014.

Almost half of email in the UK is opened on an iPhone

New figures from email delivery service SendGrid suggest that 46% of email in the UK is opened on an Apple iPhone, while 18% is opened on an iPad.

The figures come from two 10-day survey periods in 2013 and 2014, covering more than eight billion emails sent by over 125,000 companies.

3G and 4G technology will dominate mobile M2M by 2018, says new report

A new research report from Berg Insight says the market for mobile machine-to-machine (M2M) communications has begun to move from the 2G to 3G and 4G technologies.

Although cellular M2M devices on HSPA and LTE networks are expected to account for under 20% of the global market by the end of 2014, they’re forecast to dominate with more than 50% by 2018. Meanwhile, shipments of 3G/4G M2M devices are expected to overtake 2G M2M in 2017.

Windows Phone expected to push BlackBerry out of third place in the UK

The number of people using Windows-based smartphones in the UK is expected to overtake the number of BlackBerry users this year, according to a new report from digital marketing specialist eMarketer.

It anticipates the number of BlackBerry users dropping by 35.2% this year to 2.4 million, with an even steeper drop in 2015 to just 1.4 million users.
