Mobile messaging will almost double in the next five years

New report says Instant Messaging will be the biggest driver

Juniper Research has forecast that the amount of mobile messaging traffic worldwide will reach 28.2 trillion messages per year by 2017, nearly double the 14.7 trillion messages expected to be sent this year.

It says most of this growth will come from instant messaging (IM), which will account for over a quarter of all mobile messages in five years’ time.

Huawei plans to spend £1.3 billion in the UK

Technology business Huawei says it’ll invest £650 million in its UK operations and will spend another £650 million in procurement over the next five years. The company, which already employs over 800 people in the UK, now plans to increase its workforce to over 1,500 staff by 2017.

Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei, announced the plans after a meeting with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Lord Green, the Minister of State for Business.

Apple announces iPhone 5 along with new iTunes, iPod touch and iPod nano

Apple has announced the latest version of its iPhone - the iPhone 5 - in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions. It’s also revealed new iPod touch and iPod nano music players, along with plans to update its iTunes music software in October.

The new 4G-equipped iPhone 5 is equipped with a 4-inch ‘Retina’ display and Apple’s iOS6 operating system running on the company’s A6 chip. It’s just 7.6mm thick, making it 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the previous model.

The one billionth Android smartphone is expected to ship next year

Research company IHS has forecast that cumulative global shipments of smartphones using the Android operating system will exceed 1 billion in 2013, just five years after the mobile OS was launched.

Google recently confirmed it’s activated 500 million Android devices and is now activating 1.3 million new devices every day.
