US launches cell phone emergency alert system

The United States is introducing a new public alert system that will deliver warnings to mobile phones in the event of emergency. The system is first being rolled out in New York and Washington and will operate nationwide by April 2012.

BBC Apprentice shows us what's wrong with Mobile Apps

James Rosewell writes:

Tonight's BBC Apprentice was about building a Mobile Application. Two teams of supposedly bright entrepreneurial talent were tasked with creating a Mobile App in 2 days. The App with the highest number of downloads 24 hours after being launched would win this stage of the competition. App stores didn't include Apple, but did include Nokia, Android and Blackberry.

Ofcom asks consumers for feedback about unexpectedly high mobile bills

Telecoms regulator Ofcom is asking consumers who've received an unexpectedly high mobile, landline or broadband bill to fill in a questionnaire.

It's gathering the information to help it understand more about the issue of 'bill shock'.

Microsoft agrees to acquire Skype

Microsoft has agreed to acquire online telecom company Skype for $8.5 billion.

The two companies hope to complete the deal by the end of the year, subject to regulatory clearance. Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, led by current Skype CEO Tony Bates who'll become President of the Microsoft Skype Division.
