Arqiva becomes one of the UK's biggest WiFi hotspot providers

Communications infrastructure company Arqiva has agreed to acquire UK-based WiFi operator Spectrum Interactive. The deal, which will enable Arqiva to accelerate the development of its wholesale mobile data business, is worth £23.4 million.

All employees of Spectrum Interactive are expected to join Arqiva.

Three-quarters of UK mobile consumers are still on the wrong tariff

Just 26% get the lowest price, says billmonitor.com report

billmonitor.com, which offers an Ofcom-accredited mobile phone bill analysis and price comparison service, has calculated that UK consumers waste £6 billion per year by being on mobile phone tariffs that are either too small or too excessive for their needs. The figure has increased by £1.1 billion since the company’s last survey in 2011.

74% of mobile consumers are thought to be on the ‘wrong’ contract, just two percentage points down from last year’s report.

New research reveals phone calls are no longer the main use for smartphones

A new report from O2 has revealed that the average smartphone owner now spends more than 2 hours a day using their phone.

However, voice calls aren’t the main priority for these consumers. 74% of smartphone users use their handsets to take photos, with 71% using their phones for calls. And more time is spent on mobile internet browsing than making phone calls.

mPowa mobile payment service goes live for Apple iOS devices

The mPowa mobile payment service, which was announced earlier this year, is now available on Apple iPhone and iPad devices.

Individuals and organisations that want to take credit and debit card payments can download the app and register their details to receive a plug-in card reader.

Qualcomm restructures its business to protect its patents

Mobile technology company Qualcomm Incorporated is planning to change its corporate structure. It says the reasons include improving its product delivery and protecting its patent portfolio from any claims that involve other parts of the company.

After the restructure there’ll be a new wholly-owned subsidiary called Qualcomm Technologies Inc (QTI). This business will handle Qualcomm’s research and development activities along with its product and services businesses, including the QCT semiconductor business.
