UK mobile phone specialist Phones 4u goes into administration

Over 5,500 jobs at risk

UK mobile phone specialist Phones 4u and a number of its associated businesses - including MVNO Life Mobile - have gone into administration today.

The company says it follows the decisions of Vodafone and then EE not to renew their network agreements, which represented over 90% of all connections it made.

It’s reported that Vodafone UK won’t renew its network agreement with Phones 4u when it ends in February next year.

This means Phones 4u shops will not be able to offer ‘pay monthly’ connections and upgrades on the Vodafone network.

It’s been nearly 10 months since EE launched the UK’s first 4G network and an estimated 55% of the country is now enjoying its benefits. The fourth generation of mobile networks has brought speeds of between 10-12 megabytes per second to thousands of areas across Britain, creating somewhat of a revolution in super-fast mobile browsing.

Insurance business PAS fined £2.8 million for poor handling of Phones 4u mobile phone insurance complaints

The Financial Conduct Authority has fined insurance intermediary Policy Administration Services Limited over £2.8 million for poor complaints handling between June 2009 and September 2011.

PAS administered mobile phone insurance policies sold by Phones 4u, which meant it handled claims, complaints and other customer relations.
