Technology company NCR – probably best-known for its cash registers and ATMs – has acquired mobile content optimisation specialists Mobiqa. Edinburgh-based Mobiqa uses SMS, MMS, web links and email to deliver barcoded tickets – including airline boarding passes - to mobile phones. NCR, although based in the USA, has an R&D facility 60 miles away in Dundee.

Virgin Media's online and mobile TV player appears to have moved out of beta. Massachusetts-based SeaChange International has announced that the Virgin Media Player is now live and using SeaChange's multi-screen technology.

UK communications regulator Ofcom will be merged with postal services regulator Postcomm as part of the UK government's cost-cutting plans. In addition, a number of Ofcom's duties are to be changed or removed.

Vodafone's One Net service, which combines fixed-line and mobile communications for businesses, now has one million users in Europe. The One Net service allows users to answer calls on either their fixed or mobile phones, with the ability to transfer calls between any phones within the business and retrieve messages from a combined voicemail box.

The O2 More opt-in marketing service is introducing location-based mobile marketing to the UK. The trial scheme will allow brands to target their promotions at consumers who are within a specific area.
