Annual consumer M2M device shipments expected to reach 13.8 million in 2017

A new research report from Berg Insight expects shipments of consumer-focussed M2M devices to increase from 5.3 million worldwide last year to 13.8 million in 2017. That’s a compound annual growth rate of 21.1%.

It notes that eBook readers and personal navigation devices are the most common consumer M2M devices.

Nook advertising campaign breached the ASA advertising code

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint about recent advertisements for discounted Barnes & Noble Nook eBook readers.

In April Barnes & Noble cut the price of the basic Nook reader from £79 to £29, advertising the product’s availability at Argos, Asda, Blackwell’s, Currys, Foyles, John Lewis, PC World, Sainsbury’s and Very.

Amazon reports a loss in its quarterly results

Amazon.com has announced financial results for the second quarter of 2013, with a reported $7 million (£4.6 million) loss compared with a $7 million profit in the same quarter last year.

Net sales were up 22% year-on-year to $15.70 billion in Q2 2013, while operating income fell 26% to $79 million.

Barnes & Noble cuts Nook tablet prices in the UK

Last month bookseller Barnes & Noble announced that its Nook tablets wouldn’t be produced as own-brand devices any more.

Although it would maintain the production of its eBook readers, the next generation of Nook colour-screen tablets would be co-branded with third-party manufacturers.
