Ofcom works with Google and London Zoo to showcase 'white space' wireless trials

Ofcom has announced details of a ‘white space’ wireless technology trial with Google and London Zoo.

White space technology takes advantage of the unused gaps in radio spectrum that has been allocated for TV transmissions. Its power and frequency gives it a greater range than Bluetooth and WiFi connections.

Internet of Things specialist Neul has been acquired by Huawei

Cambridge-based Neul, which specialises in producing hardware to support the ‘Internet of Things’, is reported to have been acquired by Huawei.

The deal is said to be worth £15 million.

3G and 4G technology will dominate mobile M2M by 2018, says new report

A new research report from Berg Insight says the market for mobile machine-to-machine (M2M) communications has begun to move from the 2G to 3G and 4G technologies.

Although cellular M2M devices on HSPA and LTE networks are expected to account for under 20% of the global market by the end of 2014, they’re forecast to dominate with more than 50% by 2018. Meanwhile, shipments of 3G/4G M2M devices are expected to overtake 2G M2M in 2017.

Samsung acquires home automation specialist SmartThings

Samsung has acquired home automation specialist SmartThings for what’s thought to be around $200 million.

SmartThings will now operate as a separate business within Samsung’s Open Innovation Center group.
