HTC promises improved smartphone connectivity with home entertainment equipment

HTC Corporation has announced a new certification programme called HTC Connect. It’ll enable consumer electronics companies to offer improved sound and visual connectivity between their equipment and HTC devices.

The first HTC Connect-certified products use DLNA connections, although the scheme is expected to include Bluetooth, NFC, wireless speakers and in-car systems in the future.

New smartphone taxi app promises a response anywhere in the UK and Ireland

A new mobile app called Click A Taxi has launched in the UK and Ireland, promising coverage across all towns and cities. It’s already available in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

The Click A Taxi app is available for iPhone and Android devices. Customers who book via the app are located by GPS; the nearest participating taxi company is then located and the app provides regular updates on the arrival time. There’s no charge for the app and no fee for booking a journey.

Microsoft has agreed to acquire business-focussed social network provider Yammer for $1.2 billion.

Yammer will become part of the Microsoft Office Division and will continue to report to current CEO David Sacks.

New Virgin Mobile tariffs offer unlimited data plus smartphone insurance

Virgin Media has launched a number of new ‘pay monthly’ mobile phone tariffs today, including an unlimited data deal.

The ‘Premiere’ tariff offers unlimited data, unlimited text messaging, unlimited voice calls to UK landlines and 2,500 minutes for calling UK mobiles every month (subject to terms & conditions). It’s priced at £26 per month for a two-year minimum term, with a £5 monthly discount available for customers who already subscribe to other Virgin Media services at home.

MEPs want European cars to phone for help... but there's still no legislation

The EU’s transport and internal market committees have adopted a report that says all new cars sold in the EU from 2015 should be able to dial the emergency services automatically when they are involved in a serious accident. This recommendation isn’t legally binding, although the European Commission is expected to announce proposed legislation later this year.

Vehicles with ‘eCall’ mobile technology would automatically call the Europe-wide emergency number 112 when a crash is detected.
