Nimbuzz drops Windows Mobile application

Back in February we reported that Skype was dropping its Windows Mobile software because it didn't offer "a great Skype experience".

Now Nimbuzz, which offers instant messaging and VoIP services, says it'll be removing Nimbuzz for Windows Mobile from its website from 1st July. The reason?  "The application was not delivering a great mobile experience like on all the other mobile operating systems."

GetJar passes 1 billion application downloads

As Apple announced 5 billion downloads for its App Store, its closest rival was breaking through the 1 billion app download barrier. GetJar which launched in March 2004, is the first cross-platform application store to exceed one billion downloads.

Japanese mobile manufacturers work together on new application platform

NTT DOCOMO, Renesas Electronics, Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic and Sharp have announced an agreement that'll see them working together to develop a new application platform for mobile phones. The new platform, which promises improved processing speeds for high-quality video and 3D graphics, is intended to cut development time and costs for the four Japanese mobile phone manufacturers.

The new platform will be compatible with both the Symbian and Linux operating systems, while Android compatibility hasn't been ruled out. Mobile phones incorporating the new platform are expected to be seen in late 2011 or early 2012.

Dog tracking by mobile phone gets even smarter

Just over a year ago – podcast number 116 if you're counting – we mentioned Retrieva, a tracking and anti-theft dog collar that combined GPS, GSM and RFID technologies.

Today we hear that Retrieva is working with mobile phone sat-nav company ViewRanger to offer an even smarter service. The new features allow you to track your runaway dog on your mobile phone with on-screen maps. By showing the speed and direction of your missing dog, it can even help you to predict where your dog may be headed.
