Figures from IDC say the worldwide mobile phone market grew in the past quarter

Although ABI Research has calculated that total mobile phone shipments fell to 387.3 million units in the past quarter, the International Data Corporation has just published figures showing an increase. It says the worldwide mobile phone market grew 2.4% year-on-year in Q3 2012 to 444.5 million mobile phones.

When it comes to smartphones, it reckons 179.7 million units were shipped in the quarter; a 45.3% increase on Q3 2011.

Apple admits it lost UK iPad design ruling but emphasises 'not as cool' comments by judge

Last week the England and Wales Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by Apple and upheld a High Court ruling that Samsung’s Galaxy tablet devices didn’t infringe Apple’s registered design for the iPad.

Part of the ruling ordered Apple to link from the home page of its UK website to a notice of the ruling.

Samsung still ahead of Apple as smartphone shipments soar

The number of smartphones shipped worldwide increased by 32.8% year-on-year to 155.5 million in the third quarter, according to new figures from ABI Research. However, total mobile handset shipments fell by 1.9% to 387.3 million units.

40.2% of all mobile phone shipments in Q3 2012 were smartphones, up from 39.3% in the previous quarter.

Amazon.com makes a quarterly loss

Amazon.com has announced financial results for the third quarter of its financial year.

Net sales were up 27% year-on-year to $13.81 billion (£8.57 billion), although the company made a $274 million net quarterly loss. Most of the loss was due to the company’s investment in the LivingSocial local discount business.

Mobile phone sales help Samsung generate record quarterly profit

Samsung Electronics has published its results for the third quarter of 2012. Revenue was up 26% year-on-year to 52.18 trillion South Korean Won (£29.5 billion), while operating profit was up 91% to a company record of 8.12 trillion Won and net profit was 6.56 trillion Won.

The figures were in line with Samsung’s earnings guidance revealed earlier in October.
