Starbucks expands its UK payment app to Android devices

Earlier this year Starbucks introduced its iPhone mobile payment app to the UK - and the coffee company has now added an Android app as well.

The new Android app, which is also launching in Canada, enables customers to pay via a Starbucks Card account using an on-screen barcode. It’s also possible to manage a card account, check loyalty rewards and find local stores.

Up to 1.4 million O2 UK SIMs could be used in G4S smart meters

Last week Telefonica UK extended its partnership with G4S Utility Services, which is part of the G4S security group.

The new five-year agreement includes the provision of up to 1.4 million O2 SIM cards for ‘smart’ gas/electricity meters and is one of the largest-ever M2M deals in the UK.

RIM CEO admits he's not been happy with company performance

At the Annual General Meeting of Research In Motion today, CEO Thorsten Heins has admitted he’s “not satisfied” with the way the company has performed recently. However, he remains positive despite the likelihood of several challenging quarters ahead.

Mr Heins said the forthcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system, which is now scheduled to appear on new devices early next year, would enable RIM to offer LTE connectivity and compete with rival operating systems.

Global M2M alliance formed by KPN, NTT Docomo, Rogers, SingTel, Telefonica, Telstra and Vimpelcom

Seven major mobile network operators - KPN, NTT DOCOMO, Rogers, SingTel, Telefónica, Telstra and Vimpelcom - have formed an alliance that’ll see them working together on machine-to-machine (M2M) projects.

The initiative is also open to other operators.
