New Barnes & Noble Nook tablets coming to the UK for Christmas

US-based online and high-street bookshop Barnes & Noble has launched two new tablets in the USA and the UK. The 7-inch NOOK HD and 9-inch NOOK HD+ will support more than 2.5 million eBooks, electronic magazines and apps. In addition, B&N says TV shows and movies will also be available in the next few weeks.

Pre-orders will begin next month, with availability expected towards the end of November.

Free in-store WiFi coming to WHSmith

WHSmith is the latest UK company to arrange free WiFi for its customers. The high-street newsagent, bookshop and stationery retailer has signed a deal with The Cloud to install free WiFi in 603 of its stores across the UK.

As well as providing customers who use the service with a WHSmith ‘landing page’ offering store information and special offers, the new WiFi service will also allow easier demonstrations of the Kobo eBook readers sold in-store.

Amazon has announced a series of new products. The Kindle Paperwhite is described as the world’s most advanced e-reader, offering a higher resolution display than previous readers.

An update to the company’s Kindle Fire tablet has also been revealed, along with three new Kindle Fire HD tablets.

Tablets won't wipe out eBook readers, says ABI Research

Figures from ABI Research reveal that 11 million eBook readers are expected to be shipped worldwide this year, down from last year’s total of 15 million devices.

And despite the average tablet device selling for much more than an eReader, media tablets are expected to outsell eReaders 9 to 1 in 2012.

Barnes & Noble Nook eBook reader heading for John Lewis

Barnes & Noble, which recently announced plans for its Nook eBook reader and digital content to be available in the UK, has confirmed its first UK retail partner.

John Lewis will be selling the Nook Simple Touch (and Simple Touch with GlowLight) eBook readers in its 37 UK stores and online.
