Research says mobile phones are now the 'first screen' for teenagers

New research conducted by TNS on behalf of Orange in the UK, France and Spain, has revealed the different ways that teenagers and adults use mobile media. Orange Exposure 2012/2013 - the latest in a series of annual reports that started almost five years ago - compares smartphone and tablet usage side-by-side.

The report found that 83% of teenagers in the UK had a smartphone, while BlackBerry penetration amongst teenagers in the UK was twice as high as the overall mobile media user population.

Spain gets GSMA's joyn across all major networks

Spain’s three main mobile network operators - Movistar, Orange and Vodafone - have each launched Rich Communication Services (RCS) through the GSMA’s consumer-facing joyn brand.

It means that Spain has become the first country to offer this type of cross-network rich communications solution to mobile phone users.

Telefonica and Microsoft plan a global video platform

Telefonica and Microsoft have signed an agreement to create a new video platform that’ll be used for entertainment across Telefonica’s operating businesses worldwide.

The new service will take advantage of Microsoft’s Mediaroom online TV technology and will be capable of delivering video content to compatible set-top boxes, Xbox 360 consoles, web browsers, tablets and smartphones. Initially the service will be offered in Brazil, Chile and Spain.

European QR code usage doubles in 12 months, although the UK lags behind

New figures from the comScore MobiLens service have shown how the use of QR codes is becoming an increasingly popular way of promoting product information and encouraging sales.

The study, which collected information from smartphone users in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, revealed that the number of European smartphone users scanning QR codes via their devices grew by 96% in the past year to 17.4 million users.

Real-world mobile health trial takes diabetes monitoring to Mount Everest

A mobile health system from Telefónica is being given a tough real-world test by four diabetic people who are climbing to the base camp of Mount Everest.

Each member of the expedition, which is being led by climber and astronaut Josu Feijoo, will carry a glucometer and a tablet device with an m-health application. Internet connectivity for the tablet will be provided via WiFi from a satellite terminal.
